Prayer Boxes
Every Christian knows the importance of prayer. Jesus himself prayed long and often. The Apostle Paul tells his readers to "pray without ceasing." The church encourages members to pray at every opportunity. In private and in public the people of your congregation pray for each other. It is this intercessory prayer that most expresses Jesus' command to "love one another." So it makes sense that in the church worship space there should be a visible, practical means to encourage members to pray for each other. As it happens, there is--prayer boxes.
Prayer boxes into which people can drop written prayer requests are usually made of fine wood such as red oak, walnut or maple in a stain or white finish. Located in the narthex or at a "station" in the sanctuary, churches often place them on a box stand, either plain or elegantly carved. Some fasten their prayer boxes to a wall.
Prayer Boxes for Public Use
If your church is open to the public during the week, or if you give tours of the church, prayer boxes are a good way to connect with your visitors. Encourage people to use the box by placing prayer cards and a pen nearby. Put a sign over the box so that people know what it is for. Check the box before the worship service or prayer meetings, or appoint a prayer team to the task.
